The Stray Whisker is a collection point for three Terracycle recycling programs: Personal Care & Beauty Packaging; L'Or and Moccona Coffee Capsule; and Oral Care.
Firstly please, always recycle what you can via your council's kerbside service.
For the trickier items that cannot go into your local recycling bin, please consider collection them for dropoff with us if you are in the vicinity of The Stray Whisker at Leura, in the Blue Mountains of NSW, or lookup other collection points near you. We would love for you to leave your empties with us. We collect them until there’s a goodly sized parcel to return to Terracycle.
Please check out the requirements for each:
What do we collect?
First of all, please make use of your regular kerbside recycling for any PET bottles or tubs. They will have the recycle mark on the base. This program is for other parts of the packaging - the items that use mixed materials, lotion pumps, mascara tubes etc. Read on for more detail:
Plastic tubes and caps from any hair care, skin care and cosmetics packaging
Black/dark coloured plastic from any hair care, skin care and cosmetics packaging
Flexible plastic from hair and skin care products such as treatments, wipes and masks
Plastic pots and lids from hair care, skin care and cosmetics packaging
The containers should be as empty as possible, and certainly dry. Bring them to our store at 59 Megalong St, Leura, NSW 2780.
What happens to the waste? Once collected, the personal care and beauty product packaging is cleaned and melted into hard plastic that can be remoulded to make new recycled products.
The Beauty Products Recycling Program through Terracycle is made possible by L'Oréal. Any brand of waste is acceptable.
What do we collect?
All L'OR coffee capsules (aluminium only)
All Moccona coffee capsules (aluminium only).
Please make sure they are as dry as possible - collect them in a bucket or box lined with newspaper to help with this.
What happens to the waste? Once collected, L'OR & Moccona capsules are shredded to separate the coffee ground from the aluminium. The aluminium is then melted in order to be remolded to make new recycled products.
JDE has partnered with TerraCycle to help provide a second life for used L'OR & Moccona coffee capsules.
What do we collect? Toothpaste tubes and caps, toothbrushes, toothbrush and toothpaste tube outer packaging, floss containers.
Please note: Electronic toothbrushes and electronic toothbrush parts are not recyclable through this program.
What happens to the waste? Once collected, the tubes and brushes are separated by composition, shredded and melted into hard plastic that can be remolded to make new recycled products.
This program is a partnership between Terracycle and Colgate®
Terracycle facilitates the recycling of specialist products with the assistance of various large corporations. Please read more about their processes and outcomes here.
Beauty packaging is often made with complex mixtures of materials either for functional or aesthetic reasons, and therefore can be difficult to manage through regular kerbside programs.
Our outbound packaging is in transition to recycled and natural materials. We are using the last of our bubble wrap and - where suitable - padding products with crumpled kraft paper instead. When it comes to isolating bottles of liquid though plastic is still king for now, but we are experimenting. Getting products to you intact is our highest priority, and as much as we can do that with environmentally-friendly materials, we will.
As an online store, we package and ship parcels every day, and when we receive goods we’re interested to see how other companies manage the same task.
Pleasingly, a major partner of ours, Edwin Jagger, is ahead of this using a very high percentage of packaging which is repurposed from their own cardboard factory waste.
At The Stray Whisker we collect all incoming packaging materials, reuse them if we can, recycle or even compost (mmm, cardboard mulch!). We believe that we should all contribute to sustainable practices.
So buy once - buy well, and reduce, re-use, recycle as much as humanly possible!
